1:48 Sukhoi Su-27UB

The real subject

The Su-27UB is the two-seat combat trainer version of the heavy Soviet Su-27 fighter. The seats are arranged in tandem and the rear one is raised, so that the instructor can see forward over the student's head. The cockpit is therefore longer and divided differently from the single-seat version, and the areas masked during painting have a different shape as well.

What the set contains

This is a set of masking templates in 1:48 scale, cut to shape. A template is laid on the part before spraying, removed once the paint is applied, and under it a clean area with a sharp edge stays behind. Cutting tape by hand is therefore done away with. Which parts of the model the set covers and which kit it is cut for are given by the manufacturer on the packaging and in the instructions.

Building and painting tips

Wash the area before masking and let it dry thoroughly; on a greasy surface a template does not hold. Lift the individual elements with pointed tweezers and press the edges down with a blunt tool or a toothpick, so that paint does not run under them. Spray several light layers and let each one set; one dense layer will create a ridge at the edge of the template that stays visible once it is removed. Remove the templates as soon as the paint has set and pull them slowly at an angle across the edge, not perpendicularly upward.

Who it is for

For modelers who want their masked areas straight and sharply bounded and do not feel like cutting shapes out of masking tape. The set shortens the work considerably and the result is repeatable on another model of the same type as well.

Terms of supply

The templates alone are supplied. The model, paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
