The US Navy Elco 80 torpedo boat in the early version in 1:48 scale is a plastic kit from the I Love Kit brand, a large model of the American patrol torpedo boat of the Second World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Elco type torpedo boat in its early configuration. In 1:48 scale even a fairly small vessel makes a large model with plenty of room for detail on the deck, the armament and the superstructure. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The late version of the same type exists as a separate kit; the versions differ in the arrangement of the armament, so choose by the designation early or late according to the period you want to build.
The number in the designation Elco 80 refers to the length of the hull in feet. It was the most widespread American patrol torpedo boat of the Second World War: a wooden hull, three gasoline engines and high speed made it a vessel for night actions in coastal waters. Early boats carried their torpedoes in fixed tubes, and on the later batches lighter roll-off racks replaced them. The armament grew gradually with machine gun turrets and an automatic cannon at the stern.
A wooden hull offers room for work with shades: unify the base coat and only then break the surface up with a fine mist of shades and filters, so that it does not read as flat. The deck and the superstructure are easier to paint before they are covered, and leave the fitting of railings and antennas for the end. Fill and sand the hull joints; on smooth sides every ripple shows. Mask the waterline with good tape. A wash in the deck seams and light salt and weathering on the sides give the model scale and credibility.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
