1:50 South Lake Boat for the First National Congress of the CPC is a plastic kit of a traditional Chinese wooden boat from South Lake, from the maker Bronco.

The kit from the maker Bronco captures a traditional Chinese wooden vessel of the so-called pleasure type, of the kind used on inland lakes. The particular vessel is connected with a historic assembly that was held on South Lake, and today it is listed in China as a protected object. The model is an injection-molded plastic kit meant to be glued and painted, and the 1:50 scale corresponds to a fairly compact finished model.
Chinese pleasure boats of this type had a flat bottom suited to shallow inland waters, a wooden hull and, above the deck, a light roofed cabin with window lattices and carved elements. They did not serve to carry cargo but for passengers to spend time on the water, so the greatest attention was given to exactly that superstructure. A combination of an oar and a rudder worked from the stern provided the propulsion and the steering. In design it is a type that held on in the Chinese interior for centuries practically unchanged, and that makes it interesting even for modelers who do not otherwise go in for ships.
Glue and sand the hull over before you start on the superstructure, so that the small carved elements are not damaged by the sanding. A wooden look is done well over a light ocher base, over which a darker glaze is drawn along the grain, or an oil paint spread out with a dry brush. Paint the roof and the lattice of the shutters separately and glue them on only once they have dried, or paint will gather in the narrow seams. A water surface in the base can be made from an acrylic modeling resin, but the model also stands out well on its own on a simple stand. A matte varnish at the end will unify the surface and take away the unwanted gloss of the plastic.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
