An extensive wooden kit of a historical sailing ship in 1:60 scale from the English eighteenth-century range of the Constructo brand. It is not a plastic model: the basis is a keel and transverse frames, onto which the hull is gradually planked with wooden strips. Metal fittings, rigging and spars go with it. It is a build for long winter evenings and a project rather than a weekend model.
The Endeavour was originally built at Whitby as a merchant collier and became famous only as the vessel of James Cook's first Pacific expedition in the years 1768 to 1771. Her merchant origin was exactly what helped her: a broad hull with a shallow draft took large stores, stood up to long voyages far from port and could, if necessary, be beached and repaired. That is why she looks stockier than the slender warships of the same period.
First check that the frames are square and symmetrical on the keel, because every deviation is multiplied in the planking. Soak the strips in warm water or warm them before bending; do not force dry wood. Do the planking one strip at a time from the deck downward and keep checking that the butt joints do not run out into a wedge. After sanding, wooden models are usually not sprayed all over the hull; instead a wood stain and a varnish are used, which let the grain show. Tension the rigging gradually and symmetrically and fix the knots with a drop of thinned PVA glue. Cyanoacrylate glue suits the metal fittings and ordinary PVA the wood.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, wood stain and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
