This kit in 1:700 scale captures a frigate of the Chi Yang class of the Republic of China Navy. It is an injection-molded plastic model supplied unassembled and unpainted. The contents of the package, that is, the number of sprues and the presence of etch or a stand, and also whether the model is conceived as full hull or as a waterline version, are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.
The Chi Yang class came about through the takeover of American Knox class frigates, which were originally built for escorting formations and for anti-submarine warfare. It is characterized by a slender hull with a high bow, a massive angular superstructure merging into a single funnel and a gun turret on the bow. It is precisely this silhouette that makes the ship a rewarding subject for a small scale: the model is fairly long and slender, but it does not have as many small structures as later types, so the build stays manageable.
In 1:700 scale clean work decides everything. Sand the seams on the hull before any detail comes along, because you will not get back to them afterward. Paint the superstructure separately and glue it on only after spraying; that saves you masking. Additional etch, mainly railings and ladders, is usually not part of the package and has to be bought as well, but its contribution is pronounced at this scale. For color you will manage with a few shades of gray and a difference between the deck and the sides. Choose very fine weathering: suggested traces of rust under the hawses and a weak wash in the seams. If you are planning a water surface, think it through before you glue the hull together.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
