A self-adhesive masking sheet cut to the shape of the deck areas of the battleship HMS Rodney in 1:700 scale. It is not a kit or a veneer deck; it is an aid for the modeler who wants to spray the deck in paint and at the same time separate the deck areas accurately from the surrounding metal parts. The sheet is cut to the parts of the one plastic kit given for this product, so check before buying that this is the one you are building.
A deck in 1:700 scale has shapes that are hard to bound with a brush: narrow margins along the sides, cut-outs around barbettes and the bases of superstructures. A boundary drawn by hand tends to be shaky, and in a photograph of the finished model it is usually the first thing the eye notices. A pre-cut mask moves that work from the hand to a cutting plotter; the outline fits the shape of the part and the transition between colors is sharp along its whole length.
Degrease the plastic before sticking and let it dry perfectly; grease from the fingers is the commonest cause of paint creeping under the edge. Lay the mask in sections and press the edges down with a wooden stick or a rounded toothpick, especially on curves. Spray the paint in several very thin coats and at right angles to the surface, as a heavy coat is drawn under the edge before it can dry. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set, not after it has fully cured; draw it off at an angle and slowly, so that it does not take the dried film with it.
The set is not a model on its own. The paints, glue and plastic kit are not included in the package.
