This item is not a model of the ship but an accessory wooden deck for a plastic model of the Japanese battlecruiser Haruna in her 1915 form, in 1:700 scale. It is made of thin real wood veneer, laser-cut exactly to the shape of the deck areas of the model and fitted with an adhesive layer. On the underside there is a backing film; once it is peeled off, the part is stuck straight onto the plastic deck.
Spraying a convincing wooden deck in 1:700 scale is one of the hardest disciplines of ship modeling — the areas are tiny, the planks fine, and paint quickly fills the engraved detail. Wood veneer solves the problem by another route: the surface is real wood with real grain, so neither the paint nor the shade has to imitate anything. The result looks natural, has the right tone and a fine rendering of the seams, and sets the deck apart from the gray metal areas without any need for masking. The deck is tied to the particular form of the ship from 1915, that is to the original configuration, not to the later rebuilt state.
Degrease the plastic deck thoroughly before gluing and get rid of the dust; sand down any unevenness and glue residue. Dry-fit the part first to check that it sits exactly, and only then peel off the backing film. Lay it on from one edge and press it down gradually so that no air bubbles form. Fine cutouts around the superstructures and the cranes can be refined with a sharp scalpel. The veneer can be toned slightly with a glaze to taste, or brought out with a very fine dark wash, and finally covered with a matte varnish that unifies and protects the surface.
It is an accessory, not a model. The basic kit of the ship, glue and paints are not included in the package.
