An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 scale captures the Japanese battleship Mutsu in a state corresponding to the outbreak of the Pacific War. Fujimi is a Japanese manufacturer with an extensive range of ship models in exactly this scale, which is the established standard for large surface ships: on a shelf the model stays reasonably large and at the same time it carries a considerable amount of detail.
Mutsu was the second unit of the Nagato class and she entered service in the early 1920s. The main armament consisted of 41 cm guns in twin turrets, supplemented by a secondary battery in casemates. In the 1930s the ship went through an extensive modernization that markedly changed her silhouette: rebuilt superstructures, a modified funnel and added anti-aircraft armament. The form at the outbreak of the war therefore corresponds to the state after this rebuilding. Mutsu was lost in June 1943 after an internal explosion of a magazine; during the war she practically never came to be committed against surface forces.
With ship models in 1:700 it is patience in seating the small parts that decides: gun barrels, boats, cranes and superstructure platforms. It pays to build in subassemblies and to let them dry before you seat them on the deck. Spray the hull and the decks with primer and then with paint; Japanese ships are usually painted in gray shades with the deck treated differently, but choose the exact shades according to the instructions in the box. The detail comes out after a dark wash and a light dry brush on the edges. Check in the instructions whether the hull is to be built as a full one or only to the waterline.
