This kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the heavy cruiser Kumano, the last ship of the Mogami class, in her 1942 configuration. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread for ship models, so the finished model fits into a collection of Japanese units and at the same time into an ordinary cabinet. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the treatment of the hull are stated on the box; check them against the description on the packaging.
Kumano was the fourth ship of the Mogami class, built in the second half of the 1930s. The ships of the class came about with 15.5 cm guns in triple turrets in order to comply with the treaty limits for light cruisers, and before the war they were rearmed with 20.3 cm guns in twin turrets. Their equipment was supplemented by torpedo armament and catapults for reconnaissance floatplanes aft. During the war Kumano and her sister Suzuya formed a pair that operated together; the 1942 appearance corresponds to the early stage of the fighting in the Pacific, still before the later extensive addition of anti-aircraft armament and radars.
Prepare the hull and the decks first: sand and if necessary fill the seams, because once the superstructures are fitted there is no access to them. Glue small parts such as the gun barrels, the cranes and the catapults with thin cement for plastic, which is applied with a fine brush after the part has been offered up. Painting: a gray base on the hull and the superstructures, a different shade on the deck, then a thin wash into the recesses and a gentle dry brush on the edges. Photo-etched railings and rigging are not included in the package, but it is precisely they that raise the final impression of a ship model the most. Decide beforehand between the full hull variant and the waterline one on a water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
