The set from Artwox Model is not a kit of the ship but an aftermarket accessory for a modeler who is building the battleship Nagato in her 1942 state in 1:700 scale. The thin wooden veneer is cut to the shape of the deck areas, on the face it carries the laying of the planks printed on it and on the back a self-adhesive layer. It replaces a plastic part with an engraved grid by a surface that has a real grain and a naturally uneven tone. The set is designed for the Aoshima 045107 kit.
The Nagato was a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the lead unit of her class. During her service she went through an extensive modernization in which the silhouette of the superstructures and the arrangement of the funnels changed. The state of 1942 matches the form after those modifications. The wood-covered areas of the main deck took up a large part of the view from above, so their workmanship is essential on the model.
The shade decides. Veneer from the factory tends to be lighter than the way the deck looked in service, and if you leave it untreated it can read as too yellow against the gray paint of the hull. The solution is a very thinned stain or a heavily thinned oil paint in a brownish gray tone, applied in one pass along the planks and pulled off at once with a cloth. Try the shade on an offcut first, not straight on the deck, because the veneer soaks the colorant up at once and it does not come back. Only then bring out the gaps with a thin wash and seal the whole with matte varnish. Sand the plastic under the veneer and degrease it with alcohol beforehand.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
