About product

Ship railings 45 ft with chain bars, the shorter version, three bars (photo-etch) - Eduard

A photo-etched detail accessory from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:700 scale. The set holds photo-etched ship railings of the 45 ft pattern with chain bars and serves to replace coarse plastic or entirely missing railings on the decks of ship models. The lower bars of the railing are formed by a fine sagging chain, and in this shorter version it offers a shorter overall length of etched strip than the longer version. It is a universal accessory, not meant for one particular ship but usable on a whole range of plastic kits in the same scale. A reminder that this is not a model but a separate detail accessory.

What the set is for

Railings are among the elements that most affect the realism of a finished ship model. Injection-molded plastic railings tend to be too thick and do not scale faithfully, which is why they are replaced with fine photo-etch a few tenths of a millimeter thick. The lower bars in this version are formed by a sagging chain, as was typical of US Navy railings. The 45 ft designation is the manufacturer's label for this railing pattern, the three bars set out the number of horizontal rails, and shorter distinguishes the amount of railing on the strip. The parts stay in the fret and are separated from it once they have been bent and glued on.

Usage tips

Take the railings carefully out of the fret and fold them at the bend along the engraved lines, ideally with a photo-etch bending tool or two razor blades. They are bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate) applied in a minute amount to the feet of the stanchions; wipe away any excess glue at once. Before painting, degrease the parts, apply a primer and spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats so that the fine details are not filled in. Glue longer straight stretches in one go and shape the curves of the hull step by step. Once dry, the lower edge can be eased gently against the deck and picked out with a wash.

Who the set is for

  • For ship modelers who want to replace coarse plastic railings with fine metal
  • For builds in 1:700 scale that call for faithful deck details
  • For more experienced modelers used to working with photo-etch and super glue
  • As a universal accessory usable on several different ship kits

This is a detail accessory, not a model. The ship kit, glue, paints and other materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched accessory, that is a set of fine metal railings that you glue onto your ship model. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

The set is universal and not tied to one particular ship. You will use it on various plastic ship models in 1:700 scale as needed.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate) applied in a very small amount is best. Classic cement for plastic does not hold on metal photo-etch.

They differ in the overall length of the etched strip of railing. This shorter version holds less of it, so you will cover shorter stretches of deck.
