The plastic kit Space Rengo Kantai Space Submarine I-401 in 1:700 scale from Suyata — a space treatment of the second vessel of a well-known submarine class.
Responsibility details are not available.
An unassembled and unpainted plastic kit from the science fiction range by Suyata, in which the silhouettes of historic vessels are carried over into a space setting. It is not a documentary replica but an imaginative reworking supplemented with elements that were not on the original vessel. The 1:700 scale is the classic ship scale and keeps the model at a sensible size. The contents of the package and the number of parts are stated on the packaging of the kit.
The I-401 was the second completed vessel of a Japanese class of large submarines of the late Second World War. These were exceptionally large ships with great range, built around the requirement to carry floatplanes across an ocean. The airplanes were carried in a cylindrical deck hangar and launched from a catapult on the bow. The characteristic proportions — a long hull, a prominent lengthwise hangar body and a conning tower offset from the center line — stay readable in the space stylization too.
Glue the lengthwise seams of the hull with thin cement for plastic, let the joint cure and then smooth it by sanding through several grits. Lay the primer on thinly, so that the texture of the deck and the hangar stays visible. A science fiction treatment will take a bolder color scheme than a conventional ship: a darker base, metal accents on the propulsion elements and lighter details on the edges. A dark wash in the recesses and a fine dry brush will add depth. The model suits a stand rather than an imitated water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
