An add-on for builders of a model of the American aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in 1:700 scale: a very thin veneer of real wood, precisely cut to the shape of the flight deck. This is not a kit of the ship but an add-on to a particular kit, whose designation you will find in the name of the product. The natural structure of wood gives the deck a fine, irregular grain that is reached with a brush or an airbrush only with great effort, so the model looks like a miniature of the real ship even close up.
USS Enterprise, nicknamed the Big E, was among the busiest and most decorated ships of the US Navy in the Second World War. She went through the Battle of Midway, the fighting off Guadalcanal and other operations in the Pacific and, as one of the few front-line aircraft carriers, lived to see the end of the war. Her wooden flight deck is precisely the element on a model that a veneer of real wood renders most faithfully.
Handle the veneer carefully, as it can break in thin places. First do a dry run, seat the deck from the center and gradually press it down with a soft cloth toward the edges. Small gaps can be touched in with a fine pigment, and the whole can be clear coated at the end with a matte or satin varnish — it will even out the sheen and protect the veneer.
