An aftermarket accessory for a ship kit in 1:700 scale. It is not a model. The package consists of a sheet of thin veneer with a printed grid of planks and a self-adhesive back, cut to the outline of the deck of one particular kit, Trumpeter 06712. Please check before buying that this is the model you are building.
In 1:700 the width of a real deck plank shrinks to a fraction of a millimeter. An injection mold cannot manage such fineness, so the engraving on the plastic is in fact many times coarser than the subject would call for. Printed veneer solves that problem by a different route, namely a fine printing on real wood. The result is a deck that matches the scale from an ordinary distance while keeping the depth of the material.
The curve of the bow asks for the most attention. It is there that the planks run together and the veneer lifts most readily, because it has to follow a slightly double curvature. It helps to start gluing in the middle of the length and work toward the bow last, when the rest of the area is already fixed. Then press the tip down and hold it for a while, over a piece of soft rubber if you like. If the model stands in a cold workshop, let the sheet and the model acclimatize before the work, as cold veneer is stiffer and seats less well.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package.
