This set from Artwox Model is intended for modelers who are building the heavy cruiser USS Vincennes CA-44 in 1:700 scale. It is neither a model nor a kit but an accessory. A thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive back is glued onto the plastic deck part of the Trumpeter 05749 kit and replaces the engraved grid with the real structure of wood. In photographs of a finished model the difference is visible at once, because the veneer does not have a uniform tone but small deviations in the grain, such as a real deck plank has as well.
The USS Vincennes CA-44 was a heavy cruiser of the US Navy, a sister ship of further units of the same category. In design it was a vessel with the main armament in triple turrets, with a tall superstructure and an extensive open deck. The wood-covered areas took up a substantial part of the forward and the after deck, and their workmanship determines the overall impression of the model.
With this type of accessory it pays to devote time to weathering. Finished veneer can look all too new, while a real deck had darkened gaps and unevenly worn areas. Proceed so that once it is glued on and dry you draw a very thinned brownish gray wash over the surface along the planks, pull the excess off with a cloth along the grain and let it dry. Selected places by the superstructures and the hatchways can be darkened lightly on their own. Watch out for water-thinned products, as the veneer is thin and can ripple if it is soaked, so work almost dry. Sealing with matte varnish is advisable, as it protects the surface and evens the sheen out with the rest of the model.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
