About product

Daimler-Benz DB 603 1:72 - a resin model of the engine (CMK)

A casting of the powerplant in modeling resin in 1:72 scale. It is neither a model of an aircraft nor a part of one in the usual sense; it is an engine that is either built into the open engine cowling of a part-built plastic model or set up as a stand-alone object on a base beside a finished airplane.

The real subject

The DB 603 was a liquid-cooled inverted V12, that is with the crankshaft on top, an arrangement that Daimler-Benz used throughout its aircraft range for the sake of better visibility from the cockpit and easier placement of the armament. In capacity it was the largest production engine of this family and it powered above all the heavier twin-engine and high-altitude types of the late period of the Second World War. Characteristic are its slender silhouette and the dense ignition wiring run along the cylinder heads.

Building and painting tips

The fit into the plastic is what decides. The engine cowling of a plastic model usually has to be cut open or sanded from the inside so that the casting gets into place without pressure; resin will not yield to pressure, it will crack. Bring things together dry, therefore, until the part drops in under its own weight. Thin the inner edges of the plastic with a scalpel; with resin it is better to take material off the cowling than off the engine. It pays to grade the painting: a dark base, a dry brush in a metallic shade across the edges and finally a thin oil wash into the recesses between the cylinders. The ignition leads can be suggested with thin copper wire glued in with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to open the engine compartment on a model in 1:72 scale
  • Builders of dioramas with equipment under maintenance
  • Anyone interested in the development of aircraft engines and their construction
  • More experienced modelers working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory, not a model of an aircraft. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

Not automatically. The cowling of a plastic model tends to be thick on the inside and has to be thinned or modified so that the casting seats without pressure. Measure the space before building.

Yes, that is a usual solution. On a small base beside a finished aircraft the detail stands out that would not be visible inside a closed cowling.

A dark base, a dry brush in a metallic shade across the edges and a closing oil wash into the recesses work well. Primer is necessary before painting.

The number of parts and the extent of the casting are stated on the box.
