It is a large and striking model with a considerable wingspan, and what catches the eye is exactly the unconventional, strikingly colorful livery of the firefighting and rescue service. A decal sheet for this finish is included. Collectors of civil aviation and modelers looking for something other than military machines will appreciate the model.
The Douglas DC-6 was a successful four-engine piston airliner of the postwar era, used by airlines on long-distance routes and for cargo and special transport. The French civil protection service (Sécurité Civile) operated the DC-6 among other things as an aircraft for air support on operations, including fighting large fires. Its robust structure and long range made it a reliable machine that stayed in service long after jets arrived.
Paint the cockpit interior and the landing gear bays before closing the fuselage, and mask the extensive flight deck glazing carefully. The striking Sécurité Civile livery stands or falls on cleanly applied colors and accurate transitions: masking and spraying in fine layers will help. The large glossy areas of the fuselage call for a smooth base, so polish the surface before the decals and go over it with a gloss varnish. On a model of this size, watch the gluing of the wings and the engine nacelles so that they seat symmetrically.
