QMT 1:72 Focke-Wulf Fw-190D-9/D-11/D-12/D-13 — wheel bay masks are pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a clean separation of the wheel bay color from the outer camouflage.
Responsibility details are not available.
The QMT set is a masking aid, not a part of a model. The masks are applied over the open wheel bays once their inside is painted, and they are lifted off only after the outer camouflage has been sprayed. The designation of the set covers the D-9, D-11, D-12 and D-13 configurations, that is, the long-nosed versions of the 190 series with a high-altitude engine, whose wheel bays have the same shape.
The most common mistake when masking bays is paint creeping under. A bay always has some depth and the mask lies on an edge that need not be straight, so once it is applied, run a wooden stick or blunt tweezers around the whole perimeter and press the edge down. Then put a first, very thin coat of paint on the edge of the mask only. That coat dries and seals any gap, so a heavier pass no longer has any way to creep under. Hold the airbrush perpendicular rather than at an angle, because a pass from the side drives paint under the edge.
The Fw 190D was a development branch of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter with an inverted V12 engine and a lengthened nose and rear fuselage. The D-9 was the most widespread production version, and the other configurations listed followed on in small numbers. On these machines the inside of the bays and of the gear doors is usually painted differently from the underside of the wing, so the dividing edge is clearly visible and it pays to do it properly.
The set contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
