An injection-molded plastic kit of two German experimental mine-clearing vehicles in one box (1+1) in 1:72 scale from Takom. The set contains models of the giant articulated machine Krupp Räumer S and of the three-wheeled Vs.Kfz.617. Photo-etched parts and decals for several marking options are enclosed.
Both vehicles were German attempts at heavy machinery for clearing mines and breaking through minefields in the Second World War and neither of them reached series production. The Krupp Räumer S was a massive articulated machine weighing over a hundred tons, made up of two sections joined in the middle and running on giant steel wheels of large diameter — it crushed mines with its own weight. The Vs.Kfz.617, by contrast, was a three-wheeled machine that proved hard to control and prone to bogging down in trials, so it was canceled; one prototype survives as a museum exhibit.
In the small scale, watch for clean seams and careful cleaning up of the large wheels. Assemble the running gear and the load-bearing structure first, then the superstructures. Glue the plastic with thin cement and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate. Use a primer and an airbrush; build up the German gray or Dunkelgelb in layers. The giant steel wheels take bold weathering gratefully — metal wear on the edges, rust and above all heavy dust and mud. The set is rewarding precisely because of the unconventional look of the two machines side by side.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
