About product

Hauler 1:72 Leopard 1 Bridgelayer Biber, an aftermarket set

An accessory set from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:72 scale for a model of the German bridgelayer tank Biber, built on the chassis of the Leopard 1. It is an accessory to a plastic model, not a standalone kit: the model is not part of the package.

The real subject

The Biber is an engineer vehicle of German origin that arose by converting the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank. In place of the turret it carries a folding bridge whose sections are laid hydraulically across an obstacle without the crew having to leave the vehicle. The machine's task is to secure the passage of units across watercourses, ditches and destroyed bridges and to pick the bridge up again after the crossing. The vehicle kept the mobility of the base tank, so it advances together with the hardware for which it opens the way.

What photo-etched parts solve on a bridgelayer

From a modeling point of view a bridgelayer is above all a great deal of structure made of thin sections, sheet metal and gratings. That is exactly where injection-molded plastic is weakest: walkway gratings, non-skid surfaces, railings and brackets come out thick and solid. Photo-etched metal can replace these elements with a part of matching thickness, and because the bridge is dominant on the model and on view from every side, the difference tells across the whole appearance of the vehicle.

Building tips

With larger photo-etched parts watch the flatness, as sheet metal once rippled is hard to straighten. Use a glass or metal plate and press the part down over its whole area. Run the bends in a bending tool along the etched lines; with long edges bend gradually from one end rather than all at once. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer, ideally sprayed on large areas. Glue with cyanoacrylate at points, and on long joints rather in sections, so that you have time to align the part. Let the structure of the bridge cure thoroughly before you handle it.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of modern engineer hardware in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want a real thickness of the parts on a structure that is on view
  • Anyone interested in hardware on the Leopard 1 chassis
  • Those who have experience of larger photo-etched parts and a bending tool

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is an aftermarket accessory to a plastic kit in 1:72 scale, which has to be owned.

The set is intended for a model of the Biber bridgelayer tank in 1:72 scale. Please confirm compatibility with a particular kit before purchase.

Watch the flatness, press the part down over its whole area onto a hard plate and bend long edges gradually from one end.

Rather not. Large photo-etched parts call for a bending tool and patience, and rippled sheet metal can no longer be straightened.
