A set of figures from MARS Model captures Lithuanian light cavalry in the small 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of a vehicle or of an aircraft but an add-on set of figures, which the modeler uses in a diorama, on a base under a finished model or in a collector's display case. The figures are supplied unpainted and before painting they have to be cleaned up and rid of casting seams. Check the number of pieces on the box of the set before building a diorama.
Light cavalry carried out in European armies the tasks heavy armored cavalry was not up to: reconnaissance, securing the flanks of a formation, escorting supplies and pursuing a withdrawing enemy. It relied on speed, the endurance of the horses and mobility in the field, not on the force of a frontal charge. The equipment matched that and was substantially lighter than on armored cavalry.
Rid the small figures of casting seams with a sharp scalpel first and go over the surfaces lightly with fine abrasive paper or an abrasive sponge. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry properly, otherwise the paint will not hold on a greasy surface. The basis is a thin layer of primer applied with an airbrush or from an aerosol. In this scale a combination of an underpainting, a main tone and a dry brush, which will bring out the raised detail of the armor and the harness, works best. Paint the horses separately from the riders and join them only once they are finished, as you then get into otherwise inaccessible places. Matte varnish, which unifies the surface and protects the paint, closes the work off.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
