The MAZ-543 is a four-axle 8x8 all-wheel-drive special chassis, developed at the Minsk automobile plant for carrying very heavy and bulky loads over rough ground. Its characteristic feature is the pair of separate cabs at the sides of the forward part of the vehicle, with room left between them for the engine and for the mounting of a superstructure. The chassis became the universal platform of a whole family of derived vehicles — from carriers for missile systems through special superstructures to variants for towing and carrying artillery pieces. The combination of high load capacity, great mobility over rough ground and long range kept the type in service for many decades, and in derived versions it can still be met today.
On a vehicle with eight wheels and branching running gear it pays to assemble and paint the chassis before it is closed in by the superstructure — afterward it is hard to reach. Paint the tires separately from the rims and use a matte rubber shade, so that they do not look like plastic. On the large smooth surfaces of the cabs and the superstructure, shading of the base finish, gentle emphasis of the edges and finally a flowing shade run into the engraved lines will all show to advantage. Handle dust and mud with pigments in two tones — a lighter one on the lower areas, a darker one in the recesses and around the wheels.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
