The Scammell Pioneer was a British heavy truck with drive to the rear two axles whose development reaches back to the interwar period. The vehicle became famous for its exceptionally compliant suspension, which allowed great wheel travel and cross-country performance in rough terrain even without drive to the front axle. It was produced in three main roles: as an artillery tractor, as a tractor for lowboy semi-trailers for carrying tanks and as a recovery vehicle. The recovery standard carries a slewing crane with a windlass and a winch on the bed and served for lifting and towing damaged equipment. The production variants of the recovery vehicle differed in the arrangement of the crane and the equipment of the bed.
In 1:72 scale the parts are small, so cut them from the sprues with a sharp scalpel or nippers and sand the remains of the gates with a fine file. First finish the frame with the axles, then the bed and finally the crane, with which you should think out in advance in what position you want to fix the jib. Thin cement applied by capillary action with a fine brush suits small parts. Prime the model before painting, apply the decals onto a gloss base and even the surface out with a matte clear coat. A recovery vehicle suits more pronounced weathering, because it worked in mud and among wrecks. A dark wash in the engraved lines, dust pigments on the underside and fine rubbing on the cables and hooks have proved themselves.
