Cut self-adhesive stencils from the Czech manufacturer Armycast for aircraft models in 1:72 scale. The set is intended for spraying the Soviet red star completed by a white or yellow edging, in the early variant of this pattern. The insignia is applied in paint through the masks straight onto the paintwork of the model, so no carrier film is left on the surface and the edge is sharp even on a textured surface.
Older Soviet machines carried a plain red star with no outline. During the Second World War, however, it turned out that a richly red insignia merged into dark camouflage and was harder to make out, so the star began to be completed with a light edging — white, and on some machines yellow. This solution then developed further, up to the later combination of a white edging with a thin red line. The set covers the early form of the outlined insignia; check the color variant of the edging and the particular dimensions against a profile or a photograph of the machine you are building.
An outlined star is masked in two steps. The color of the edging goes on first, that is, a light base across the whole area of the insignia including the outline. Once it has dried, the mask of the star itself is laid in place and the red is applied — the light base also helps it to cover. Let the paint dry properly between the steps, otherwise it will flake off as the mask is removed. Always press the edges down thoroughly, mainly in the inner angles of the star, and spray thin coats straight down from above. At the end, unify the surface with a varnish and only then move on to weathering.
