An accessory for modelers who want to capture, on a flying boat, what went on away from flying as well. The set contains photo-etched maintenance platforms and the related small structures, that is items that by their nature are made up of thin profiles and mesh, exactly where photo-etching has the greatest lead over plastic. Whereas a plastic part has to have a noticeable thickness because of the mold, a metal sheet keeps its scale slenderness even after painting. The manufacturer is the Czech firm Eduard.
The Sunderland was a large patrol flying boat that spent its time at a mooring and on open water, where neither a hangar nor a platform trolley was available. Maintenance of the four radial engines was therefore dealt with directly on the water: the crew reached the engine nacelles along extending and folding platforms and walkways built into the structure. It is precisely this seeming small thing that makes the Sunderland a rewarding subject for a cabinet scene, because a model built with the platforms deployed tells a story in itself. The Mk.V version was a late production variant with Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines.
With platforms and walkways it pays to proceed slowly: first separate all the parts with a scalpel, straighten them on glass and only then bend them. Bend longer narrow profiles in a bending tool along their whole length at once, otherwise the sheet will ripple. Make the joints with a minimum of gel cyanoacrylate applied with a toothpick: an excess of glue will flood the fine mesh and the detail will disappear. Before painting, degrease the sheet with alcohol and use a primer, ideally sprayed in a thin coat so that the perforations are not clogged. Glue the assembled platforms to the model only after both parts have been painted.
