WGr.21 launchers, two pieces, 1:72 (AML)

A set of two resin underwing WGr.21 rocket launcher tubes in 1:72 scale for models of the German single-engine fighters Bf 109 of the G series and Fw 190 of the A and F series. It is an accessory for a plastic model, not a kit in its own right, and it matches the usual installation of one launcher under each wing half.

The real subject

The WGr.21 was an adaptation of a ground rocket projectile of 210 mm caliber for carriage on an aircraft. The projectile was fired from a smooth tube hung under the wing, that is clear of the propeller, and was used against targets at longer range. The tubes markedly increased drag and worsened the handling of the machine, however, so on fighters they were fitted only for a particular task and it was possible to jettison them in flight. On a model it is a conspicuous feature that fundamentally changes the silhouette of the underside of the wing.

Building tips

Wash the release agent off the parts and remove the casting blocks. Carefully clean out or lightly drill out the mouth of the tube so that it does not look solid; that is the most visible detail of this accessory. Fit them only after the lower surfaces of the wing have been varnished, when the joint holds on a firm base and you do not have to mask around them. Watch the symmetry over a flat board: stand the model on a base and line both tubes up against each other at the same distance from the fuselage and at the same angle. Glue with super glue; the gel version gives you time to adjust.
