The Caudron G.III was a French biplane with an open nacelle for the crew and a lattice tail structure carried on booms. Control in roll was handled by warping the wing, not by ailerons, which is typical of machines of that day. It served at first for reconnaissance and later became one of the most widespread training machines of its era, operated by a number of countries. A fabric-covered frame and a quantity of struts and wires make a model of it builder's work rather than just gluing parts together.
At a large scale you work with long edges, and it is precisely on them that imperfect pressure shows most. A short mask can be pressed down with one touch, while on a long one you have to work in sections and run the blunt tip of a toothpick along the edge for its whole length. The surface has to be smooth and completely dry. A mask will not hold on fresh paint and will take a layer with it on removal, while on a grainy surface a path is left under the edge where paint runs under. It proves itself to spray a very thin coat of the base shade once the mask is stuck down, which seals any gap, and only then to spray the target color. On a biplane plan the order of painting in advance, because once the struts and wires are in place many areas are out of reach.
