About product

Display Base for a 1:72 Model, RAF Wildenrath, West Germany, 1967 (Kits-World)

A printed scenic base 450 x 450 mm for models in 1:72 scale. The motif is tied to Wildenrath station on the territory of what was then West Germany and to its state in 1967. It is neither a kit nor a decal. A finished model is stood on the sheet and the scene is done, without terrain materials and without waiting for anything to dry.

What the motif captures

The assignment to a single year is more precise on this base than on motifs with a span of several years. For a modeler that means the paint scheme and markings of the model are best chosen to suit 1967 and the British units stationed on the continent. Anyone building Cold War hardware in this narrow slice of time gets a scene they would otherwise have to put together from photographs and their own guesswork.

Wear and the realism of the surface

Operational surfaces are repaired as they go, and the patches are the most conspicuous detail on them. A repaired bay has a different shade from its surroundings, its edges are irregular and the patches differ in age over time, so the surface never has a uniform color. On a model the same principle shows on oversprayed panels and places where the paint has been touched up. You need not make them everywhere; two or three panels in a barely different shade of the base color are enough. The difference should be on the edge of visibility, because in 1:72 scale every deviation of color is visually magnified. A model with a subtle unevenness of shade sits on a repaired surface far more naturally than a machine sprayed in one even coat.

Who the base is for

  • Builders of British Cold War hardware in 1:72 scale
  • Those interested in the continental deployment of the second half of the 1960s
  • Modelers who want a precisely dated scene without building a diorama
  • Photography and presentation of finished models in a display case

This is a printed scenic base, not a kit. The model and the accessories are not part of the delivery.

FAQ

To 1967. Suitable, therefore, are models in paint schemes and markings matching the second half of the 1960s.

On the territory of what was then West Germany. The motif suits British hardware stationed on the continent.

A subtle unevenness of shade on two or three panels, imitating repaired paint, helps. Keep the difference on the edge of visibility.
