Wooden boxes for the Pz.Bef.Wg. III Ausf. J are a resin accessory in 1:35 scale with a wood texture and a photo-etched bracket.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a vehicle kit but a resin accessory: wooden stowage boxes for models of the German Panzerbefehlswagen III command tank in the Ausf. J version in 1:35 scale. According to the name the castings have a wood texture worked into them and a photo-etched metal bracket belongs to the set. The name ties the set to a particular documented vehicle of the unit known as Totenkopf, which suggests that the shape and arrangement of the boxes follow a period photograph.
Command tanks carried additional radio equipment and their exteriors tended to be that much busier. Boxes on the fender or at the rear break up the smooth surface of the armor, give the model a sense of scale and open up room for a color contrast. Resin handles the pattern of planks and joints more crisply than injection-molded plastic, and there is no parting line across the wall of the box to clean up. The photo-etched bracket makes it possible to stand the box off the surface instead of gluing it flat.
The Panzerbefehlswagen III was a command derivative of the Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank. The vehicles carried extended signals equipment and the corresponding antennas, which showed in the layout of the external stowage as well. The Ausf. J version followed the matching variant of the base tank. Boxes for tools and the crew's personal kit were commonly fixed to these machines according to the habits of the particular unit, so their placement differs from one machine to the next.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap so that remains of the mold release agent are removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw rather than nipping them, as resin is brittle. It is best to sand wet and with respiratory protection. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate) for gluing, because ordinary polystyrene cement will not bond resin. Apply a primer before painting. Bend the photo-etched bracket over a sharp edge and degrease it before painting. Wood is created over a brown base with thin filters and oil stains, and the pattern of the planks is then brought out by a dark wash and the worn edges by fine drybrushing. Fit the boxes only after the vehicle has been sprayed and unify them with the model under a shared coat of dust.
This is not a model on its own but an accessory for a plastic kit. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
