A plastic kit from the so-called line of egg-shaped, miniaturized models. The subject is the carrier-borne helicopter SH-60J/K of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, but the model does not capture it to scale: the fuselage is deliberately shortened and widened into a bulbous shape, the cabin is disproportionately large against reality and the rotor with the tail boom is reduced. It is therefore a stylization, not a scaled-down version, so no scale is given for it. Anyone looking for a scale-accurate model of the SH-60 helicopter should reach for a classic kit in an ordinary scale.
The SH-60J and the following SH-60K are carrier-borne helicopters of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force derived from the American design of the Seahawk line and built in Japan under license. They serve from the decks of surface ships above all for anti-submarine warfare, for reconnaissance and for rescue and transport tasks. The SH-60K version is the later, modernized one: it has an altered cabin, different rotor blades and newer equipment. Characteristic of these machines are the folding tail boom and the folding rotor, which allow stowage in a ship's hangar.
Stylized models of this category tend to be friendly to build, because the parts are few and the shapes are large and simple; thanks to that it is a good choice for a build together with children, for a quick build between more demanding projects and for a first acquaintance with painting. Even so the usual procedure holds: clean the parts up, glue with a thin cement for plastic and spray over a filler primer. Large smooth surfaces forgive less than it might seem, so check the surface carefully before painting. Apply gloss varnish before the decals, so that they do not silver. Choose the weathering sparingly, as on a deliberately cute stylization heavy soiling looks out of place, whereas a fine bringing out of the panel lines sets the shape off nicely.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is a deliberately distorted stylization with no fidelity of scale. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
