The boxing subtitled Silence in the sky offers markings for this classic sailplane type. It is an injection-molded plastic kit that is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and as an unpowered aircraft it is a pleasant change from fighters for a modeler.
The DFS Olympia, also known as the Olympia-Meise, was a single-seat sailplane designed at the end of the 1930s as the standard type for a planned gliding contest at the Olympic Games. The contest itself never took place, but the design proved so successful that after the war it was built under license in several European countries and became one of the most widespread postwar performance sailplanes. It was of wooden construction covered with plywood and fabric, with a high-set simple wing of around fifteen meters span and a conventional tail. Whole generations of glider pilots learned to fly on these machines and a number of them survive in airworthy condition to this day.
The glider has a thin, long wing, so watch that it stays straight; support the model while gluing and let the joint cure undisturbed. The cockpit of a sailplane is glazed on every side and is clearly visible into, so paint the seat, the control stick and the instrument panel carefully before closing the fuselage up. Mask the glazing with narrow strips of tape and glue it strictly with a cement for clear parts, which will not fog the plastic. Typical is a smooth, uniform light finish with a minimum of panel lines; on a wooden structure do not try to imitate sheet metal joints, but rather go for an even glossy to satin surface. Settle the decals on a gloss base and even the surface out at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
