A plastic kit of the carrier-borne F-14B fighter aircraft in the markings of squadron VF-101 of the US Navy, in 1:72 scale. Great Wall Hobby offers a whole group of boxes of the F-14 family in this scale, and the individual boxes differ in the version of the aircraft and in the markings.
The F-14 Tomcat was a two-seat carrier-borne fighter aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, that is with a wing that set itself automatically in flight according to speed. It was designed for the defense of a carrier group at long range and could carry heavy long-range guided missiles. The F-14B version came about by replacing the original engines with newer powerplants, which got rid of the troubles of the original engines and markedly improved handling and thrust. Squadron VF-101, nicknamed the Grim Reapers, acted as a training unit in which crews converted onto the Tomcat, and its aircraft carried striking markings that make them popular with modelers.
Check whether you want to show the wings spread or swept back, because the position is often fixed during the build. Finish the cockpits of both stations before closing the fuselage up. Spray the air intakes and the exhaust nozzles separately and fit them only afterwards, as you will not get inside once it is glued. The gray schemes of the US Navy rest on fine differences of shade, so work on a smooth base and vary the shades slightly with modulation, so that the model does not look flat. Spray gloss varnish before the decals, bring the panel lines out with a flowing wash and keep the weathering restrained. On carrier-borne aircraft it works well to suggest traces of service around the hatches and on the landing gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
