A plastic kit of the G-111 Albatross amphibian aircraft in 1:72 scale from Sova Model. It is a large model of a twin-engine machine with a boat hull — in a display cabinet it takes up considerably more room than an ordinary fighter in the same scale.
The Albatross is a twin-engine amphibian with a boat hull, a retractable wheeled landing gear and a high-mounted wing with stabilizing floats under its tips. Power comes from a pair of Wright R-1820 radial engines. The G-111 designation belongs to the civil certified form of the type, converted from the original machines for commercial operation. It was exactly this amphibious capability, the ability to land on water as well as on a runway, that made the Albatross a suitable machine for links to island destinations.
The strong point of the type
The combination of a boat hull and a conventional landing gear allowed operations where no airfield existed, while still using ordinary runways without restriction. The model therefore offers an attractive subject both for a display cabinet and for a diorama with a water surface.
With such a large hull, watch the alignment of the halves — fill the seam on the boat bottom with putty and sand it back so that the transition stays smooth and continuous. Consider nose weight; with twin-engine machines that have a high wing there is a risk of the model sitting down on its tail. Build the engine nacelles and the propellers only after the hull has been painted, as masking is easier that way. Civil schemes tend to be glossy, so a good base coat, fine sanding and polishing between coats pay off. Apply the decals onto a gloss surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
