A set of self-adhesive masking templates of kabuki paper for building a model of the MiG-15 fighter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor parts of a model but an accessory that speeds up and refines the spraying of the glazing and of the other surfaces where a sharp transition of color is needed. The BASIC grade is the basic variant of the masks made for this type; the manufacturer also makes a more elaborate grade for the same aircraft.

The real subject

The MiG-15 is a single-engine fighter of the first generation of jet aircraft, with a swept wing and a high-set horizontal tail. It came about at the end of the 1940s, was produced in large numbers and under license outside the Soviet Union as well. Typical of it are the short, stocky fuselage with a circular nose air intake and a cockpit with a markedly framed canopy. It is precisely the framing of the canopy that tends to be the most laborious part of masking during the build of a model.

How to use the masks

Kabuki paper is pliable, follows curved surfaces well and leaves no adhesive on the paint after removal. Lift the individual parts out of the sheet with pointed tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, stick them onto a degreased surface and press the edges down carefully with a toothpick, so that paint does not creep under them. Spray in thin coats, as a thick coat will create a ridge at the edge of the mask. Take the mask off before the varnish has fully cured, and pull it back over itself, not perpendicular to the surface.
