About product

Kawasaki KH400-A7 of 1979 in 1:12 scale

An injection molded plastic kit of a motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. The 1:12 scale is the standard for motorcycle models and offers enough room for detail on the frame, the engine and the exhaust system. The kit captures the A7 configuration, that is, the 1979 model year. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The KH400 belonged to the line of Japanese two-stroke triples that became famous for their lively acceleration and their characteristic sound. The air-cooled three-cylinder two-stroke engine with its trio of exhausts was the technical core of the whole line and at the same time its most striking visual element. The KH designation replaced the older marking and accompanied the last phase of the development of these machines, when the design was already being gradually tempered and adapted to tightening regulations. Today the two-stroke triples of the 1970s are among the sought-after classics.

Building and painting tips

On a motorcycle you build from the frame outward, so plan the order of painting in advance. Spray and assemble the frame and the engine before you start fitting the bodywork and the tank, because once assembled you can no longer reach the inner places. The tank and the side covers usually carry the most striking color and the decals, and with them the same procedure as on an automobile body pays off: filler primer, thin coats, gloss coat, and only then the decals and a further coat. The trio of exhausts takes a play of color between polished chrome and heat-blued metal at the cylinder heads. The spoke wires and the Bowden cables are commonly replaced with thin wire, which brings the model markedly to life. Weather the chain and the brake discs gently at the end, so that they do not look like new plastic.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese motorcycles in 1:12 scale
  • Admirers of two-stroke machines of the 1970s
  • Modelers who enjoy working with chrome, wire and fine detail
  • Builders looking for a smaller project that nonetheless offers plenty of work on detail

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

From the frame and the engine outward. Spray and assemble the inner parts before you fit the tank and the covers, because once assembled you can no longer reach them.

On motorcycle models in this scale the bright parts tend to be done by plating or with paint. Which parts this package contains is given in the list on the box.

It is a manageable but detailed model. Expect careful painting of small parts and the fact that a mistake in the order of building is hard to put right.

Combine metallic shades with a heat-blued effect at the cylinder heads and use a fine wash at the end. The sharp transitions between bright and matte metal make the greatest impression.
