Flagship injection-molded plastic kit of a Formula 1 car in 1:12 scale from Tamiya. The finished model is about 40 cm long. The set is conceived as a top-class piece for a collection: a finely rendered Ford Cosworth DFV engine including fuel lines and ignition wiring, working suspension with torsion bars, steering linked to the steering wheel, removable nose and cockpit covers (so the engine and the mechanics stay in view), photo-etched parts (among them the radiator, the wing end plates and the brake discs), metal parts for the seat belts, rubber tires, decals and a driver figure. The large 1:12 scale allows a level of detail that smaller Formula 1 models cannot offer.
The Lotus 72 is one of the most influential cars in the history of Formula 1. It brought a wedge-shaped body, radiators moved to the sides of the car instead of the traditional position in the nose, and inboard brakes, which reduced the unsprung mass. It was powered by the eight-cylinder Ford Cosworth DFV, the most successful engine of its era. With the 72D version Emerson Fittipaldi won the drivers' world championship in 1972. The car is iconic visually as well: the black and gold sponsor livery known as John Player Special is one of the most recognizable in the history of the championship.
Work as on the real car: the engine and the suspension first, then the bodywork. The engine and the mechanics stay in view in the end, so it is worth investing time in them; a fine wash brings out the detail, and metallic shades and chrome touches add realism. Paint the bodywork over a perfectly sanded base; a deep gloss is achieved by laying down several thin coats of clear and then polishing them. Apply the sponsor decals over a gloss base (otherwise silvering appears) and overcoat them with clear so that the edges disappear. Leave the rubber tires matte, because glossy rubber looks unnatural on a Formula 1 car.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
