A kit of the British twin-engine de Havilland Mosquito in the B.IV bomber version and the PR.IV reconnaissance version, released by the Czech brand Mark I Models. For a twin-engine aircraft, 1:144 scale is a rewarding choice: the finished model has a reasonable span but takes up markedly less room than the larger scales, and it slots easily into a whole collection of Allied equipment. The set is intended to be glued and painted.
The Mosquito was among the structurally most interesting aircraft of its day. The airframe was built largely of wood, which saved strategic metals and allowed production in furniture workshops. Its pair of V12 engines gave the machine a speed that the fighters of the day struggled to match, which is why the early bomber and reconnaissance versions carried no defensive armament at all: their protection was performance. The B.IV version served as a fast bomber, while the PR.IV was a photo-reconnaissance conversion of the same basis with camera equipment in the fuselage. The crew consisted of two men sitting side by side.
On a twin-engine aircraft in a small scale, give the most attention to the seating of the engine nacelles and the dihedral of the wing: asymmetry shows on the finished model more than a missing detail. Glue the fuselage with weight added in the nose if the design calls for it, so that the model stands steadily. The canopy glazing is better glued with a glue for clear parts that does not darken. The smooth wooden surfaces of the real subject invite an even coat of paint, and that is exactly why it pays to lighten the center of the panels and liven the surface up a little, otherwise the model looks flat.
