A resin detail set, not an aircraft kit. It contains replacement landing gear wheels for a model of the carrier-based combat aircraft Super Hornet in 1:144 scale. On models, wheels are among the parts where the difference between plastic and resin shows immediately. A casting makes it possible to draw out the pattern of the tread, the pressing of the hub and the shape of the axle boss finely, that is the things that get lost in an injection mold at such a small scale.
The F/A-18E and the F/A-18F Super Hornet are carrier-based multirole combat aircraft operated from aircraft carriers. Compared with the earlier generation of Hornets it is a markedly larger and heavier machine with a new wing, more powerful engines and a reworked landing gear. Carrier operations place extraordinary demands on the landing gear, because the aircraft touches down on the deck practically without a flare. The landing gear legs and the wheels are therefore robust and on a model they form a visible element that carries the weight of the whole build.
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water because of mold release residue. Cut the casting block off with a saw, do not break it off. Glue with cyanoacrylate; ordinary cement for plastic will not join resin. Paint the tire dark gray, not black, and then lighten the tread with a dry brush. On carrier-based machines the hub tends to be light and contrasts with the tire, and you will reach a sharp transition with a circular mask. At the end a light hint of dust and of marks from the deck on the lower edge of the wheel comes in handy.
This is a supplementary set, not a complete kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
