About product

FuSE 65 Würzburg-Riese 1:144 (Brengun)

A kit of a ground radar in 1:144 scale from the Czech manufacturer Brengun. The set is made up of resin castings and photo-etched parts, which makes it a kit for experienced modelers; it is not an injection-molded plastic model. The subject is the German radar equipment designated FuSE 65, known under the nickname Würzburg-Riese, that is, the large variant of the Würzburg family of radars with its conspicuous parabolic antenna. The model is neither an aircraft nor a vehicle, but an accessory of ground equipment that suits dioramas with hardware in 1:144 scale in particular.

The real subject

Equipment of this kind was introduced during the year 1941 and served for the precise tracking of targets. It was used for guiding night fighters and for directing fire, while the large variant was marked by a markedly greater diameter of the parabolic reflector than the older, smaller form. Besides the stationary arrangement on service platforms a mobile version mounted on a railway chassis existed as well. The characteristic shape of the antenna makes this equipment a very recognizable element of any scene.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts with lukewarm water and detergent, so that residues of the release agent are removed; otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, not with nippers, and sand wet with protection for your airways. It is glued solely with cyanoacrylate, as ordinary cement for plastic works neither on resin nor on photo-etched parts. Bend the photo-etched parts over a metal ruler or in a bending tool, and always along the marked groove. Spray the whole with primer and only then paint; the fine texture of the antenna mesh comes out after a dark wash and a light dry brush. Stand the model on a surface with a crew or with hardware, as 1:144 scale brings the radar and aircraft together on one base.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of dioramas and airfield scenes in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers with experience of resin and photo-etched parts
  • Anyone interested in ground support and radar hardware
  • Collectors of small accessory kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a kit of resin and photo-etched parts. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The set is of resin castings and photo-etched parts, which calls for a different procedure from ordinary injection-molded plastic.

With cyanoacrylate glue. Solvent cement for plastic models acts neither on resin nor on photo-etched parts.

Release agent from the mold clings to resin castings. Without washing neither paint nor primer would hold and in time they would flake off.

It is ground equipment that will complement a diorama or a display case scene with hardware and aircraft in 1:144 scale well.
