An injection-molded plastic kit of the German tailless jet aircraft Horten Ho 229 in the small collector's scale 1:144. The box is aimed at the night fighter version, that is at a variant which during the Second World War reached neither production nor deployment. The color schemes therefore work with hypothetical units. Besides the plastic parts the set also contains a small photo-etched part for the antenna of the onboard radar, which in this scale is decisive for the overall impression.
The Ho 229, also prepared for production under the designation Gotha Go 229, was a German flying wing design powered by a pair of Junkers Jumo 004 jet engines. The absence of a fuselage and tail surfaces was meant to reduce drag and extend range. During the war only a prototype flew; series production and combat deployment never came about. The night fighter variant remained a project: a second crew member and an onboard radar were counted on for it, with antennas that would protrude from the leading edge.
The 1:144 scale means a small number of very small parts — thin cement for plastic with a capillary action, applied into a joint that is already put together, proves its worth. The seam around the perimeter of the wing and the leading edge deserve the main attention: a thin layer of filler and sanding to a smooth profile will do more than any extra detail. Spray the whole model with primer before painting, so that the fine engraved lines stand out, and thin the paint more than usual — in this scale a coarser layer immediately hides the surface detail. Under the decals, apply a gloss compatible with the paint used.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
