A model of the Martin WB-57F high-altitude aircraft in 1:144 scale. A rebuild of the American B-57 bomber with an exceptionally large wingspan.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Martin WB-57F was a high-altitude aircraft derived from the B-57 bomber, which itself came about as the American license-built version of the British Canberra. The rebuild gave the machine a new, much longer wing and sent it to altitudes that ordinary aircraft cannot reach. From there it took air samples, watched the weather and carried out high-altitude reconnaissance tasks, that is work that needs an aircraft able to stay a long time in very thin air. A few examples still fly today in research service, which makes it one of the longest-used American jet machines.
The model is in 1:144 scale. Its mark of recognition is precisely the huge wingspan, which makes the machine look unusual even in a small scale. The wing is also the main thing that needs time during the build. A list of the parts and the choice of color schemes are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The long wing is the most sensitive place in the build. Seat it home, check the dihedral of both halves and, before the glue sets, look at the model from the front to make sure the wings are symmetrical. Support the model until it has hardened. Sand and polish the joints carefully, because high-altitude machines wore simple overall finishes under which every unevenness of the surface shows. Tape a mask over the cockpit glazing before spraying and apply the paint in thin coats, otherwise graininess will appear.
For collectors in a small scale and for modelers drawn to unusual machines outside the main combat lines. The kit is supplied unassembled; paints, glue and further accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
