About product

Pratt and Whitney JT8D-17B for the Boeing 727-200 Advanced in 1:144 scale (LACI)

A resin accessory for building the stretched version of the Boeing 727 in 1:144 scale. It replaces the engine installation from a kit with a more accurate casting. The set is a replacement part for a model under construction, not a kit of the aircraft.

The real subject

The stretched version of the Boeing 727 in the Advanced form had a higher takeoff weight and a longer range than the original machines, and that called for more powerful propulsion. The JT8D-17B is therefore a more powerful version of the same engine with a low bypass ratio that the older 727s carried. In external shape it differs only a little from the weaker versions; the difference is mainly in thrust and in settings. This is precisely the typical reason why several versions of an engine are met with on one type of aircraft: the basic and the stretched form used the same family, but the particular power rating was chosen according to the weight of the aircraft and the routes on which the carrier operated it. The installation stayed the same, two nacelles on short pylons at the sides of the rear fuselage and a third engine in the root of the vertical tail, to which air is led by a curved duct from an intake above the fuselage.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings in warm water with dish soap, otherwise paint will not hold on the surface. Cut the casting remnants away with a saw and finish with a file; never break them off. Resin sands more softly than polystyrene, material goes faster and paper clogs quickly, so sand wet and with respiratory protection. Super glue holds the joints, with a filler if needed. Try the joint with the pylon and the offset of the nacelle from the fuselage dry; with a rear installation a deviation shows up mainly when seen from behind and from above. Apply the metal shades of the exhaust section and the inside of the intake before the final assembly.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the stretched version of the Boeing 727 in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want the correct engine installation for this variant
  • More experienced modelers working with resin and super glue
  • Collectors of classic airliners of the jet era

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting for more experienced modelers. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The higher takeoff weight and the longer routes called for more thrust. On the same type of aircraft the particular power rating of the engine was chosen according to the weight and the operating demands of the carrier.

In external shape only a little; the difference is mainly in the power version of the engine. For an accurate build of a particular variant it is therefore best to choose the matching set.

It is not. It is a resin detail accessory that is used on a model from another kit.

On a three-engine aircraft the difference between one engine and a complete set matters; check the contents beforehand.
