About product

Great Wall Hobby 1:144, RAF Vulcan K.2, air-to-air tanker

A plastic kit of the British machine Avro Vulcan in the K.2 tanker version in 1:144 scale, the manufacturer Great Wall Hobby. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. With such a large aircraft 1:144 scale is practical, since the finished model stays reasonably sized even on an ordinary shelf, while keeping the characteristic silhouette of the delta wing.

The real subject

The Vulcan was a British bomber with a pronounced delta wing and four jet engines built into the wing roots. It served as a carrier of strategic armament and later found use in a conventional role as well. Some of the machines were modified in their late service into air-to-air tankers designated K.2, which refueled other aircraft in flight by means of equipment in the rear fuselage. This modification came about as a quick answer to an urgent need and the machines carried it only for a short closing part of the type's service.

Building and painting tips

The large area of the delta wing is both the key and the problem for the model. Clean the joint of the wing with the fuselage up and sand it with gradually finer paper, because any irregularity will be visible on an unbroken area. Close the undercarriage bays and the air intakes before you start sanding, so that dust does not get into them. Spray the gray upper surfaces and the lighter underside with an airbrush in thin layers; with large-area models it pays to lighten the shade slightly, otherwise the model becomes optically heavy. Bring the panel lines out with a restrained wash, as heavy weathering would look unconvincing in this scale.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in British postwar aviation
  • Collectors of large aircraft in the space-saving 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want the less usual tanker version
  • Builders with experience of filling and sanding large areas

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a conversion into an air-to-air tanker, which made it possible to refuel other aircraft in flight by means of equipment in the rear fuselage.

1:144 scale makes even a large aircraft a model suited to a smaller display case.

The main work is in a clean joint of the wing with the fuselage and in sanding large areas. Experience with filling comes in handy.

The range of markings is given by the kit instructions.
