The dark green of the upper surfaces of Japanese army aircraft of the Second World War. Covers well even in a thin coat, suitable for building up the color gradually with an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
This dark green tone was worn by aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force from the second half of the 1930s until the end of the war. It was carried by the Ki-43 and Ki-84 fighters, the Ki-46 long-range reconnaissance aircraft and the Ki-21 bomber. In reality it was not a single shade but a whole family of closely related tones, since the paint was supplied by several manufacturers and individual batches differed from one another. The tone offered here sits in the middle of that range, so it works equally well on a freshly delivered aircraft and on one faded by the Pacific sun.
The pigment covers readily even in a thin coat, which lets you build up the color gradually and let a darker base show through beneath it. This gives the surface a depth that a single fully opaque coat never has. To the touch, the paint sets within a few tens of minutes; a further coat can follow after about half an hour.
The base is solvent-based, so the consistency is adjusted only with thinner from the same brand, not water. The bottle contains 10 ml. Japanese aircraft were known for chipped paint around the wing roots and the access panels used by ground crews. It therefore pays to spray a bare-metal tone underneath the green and then carefully wear through the top layer, giving a more convincing result than gray spots painted on afterward.
