Blackish Manzonia 2 x 5 x 1000 mm, 10 pieces is a pack of wider flat strips of dark wood for facing wooden ship models.

The pack holds ten strips with a section of 2 x 5 mm and a length of 1000 mm. Of all the common profiles this one is most at home on decks and on the second, visible layer of hull facing: a band 5 mm wide covers an area faster and gives a more pronounced pattern of planks. Dark manzonia also suits single contrasting bands among paler facing, where it is used as an expressive feature.
You shorten the strips with a scalpel or a fine-toothed saw; with facing it pays to prepare all the pieces at once to a template, so that the seams come out regular. It is bonded with PVA wood glue in a thin layer, with the part pressed down and held until the glue starts to grab. Over the curves of a hull, bend a strip moistened or steamed and let the shape dry on a form, or else pinned directly to the frames. Once finished, sand the whole facing with fine paper along the grain; only then comes the clear varnish or hard wax that brings the grain of the wood out.
