The material

Sapelli is a tropical hardwood of a dark brown tone with a dense and even figure. In modeling it is valued for exactly that fineness: in a small scale a coarse figure is distracting, because growth rings as large as on furniture would look like planks a meter wide on the deck of a model. The dark tone also does without stain, so you are spared the step in which the color most often drifts from piece to piece.

Dimensions and use

The strip has a section of 4 x 5 mm and a length of one meter, that is 1000 mm. A longer stick is an advantage in building: a long run of planking or of railing can be carried in one piece, without the joints that show on a finished model. A section of this size comes into its own on load-bearing and framing elements, on strips along the side of the hull, on the edges of decks and anywhere a square stick is needed rather than a thin strip. How many pieces the package contains is stated by the manufacturer.

• Cut it with a sharp knife or a fine saw against a surface, as hardwood splinters under a blunt tool.
• Dampen the wood and let it warm through before bending, as it snaps when dry.
• Glue it with PVA wood glue and press the joint with a clothespin or a clamp.
• Sand the surface along the grain before finishing; across it, scratches stay that varnish will bring out.
• Choose pieces for one assembly by figure and shade, as wood naturally varies.

Who it is for

The strip is for builders of wooden ship models and for anyone who makes their own parts: a missing piece of a kit can be replaced from it, or an entirely new element built. The kit, glue, varnish and stain are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
