The Sd.Kfz. 251 was a German medium half-track carrier of the Second World War. At the rear it ran on a tracked suspension, at the front on an ordinary axle with wheels on pneumatic tires. The front wheels were not driven; the vehicle was steered with them. That is exactly why they are so visible on a model: they are at the front, nothing covers them and a viewer usually looks at them first. A spare wheel belonged to the standard equipment of the vehicle and in period photographs it is often seen stowed on the hull or on a fender.
The set holds the front wheels for 1:16 scale and a spare wheel with a rim. The tires are rendered as loaded, that is with the area meeting the base slightly squashed, as matches a vehicle at rest. The type 1 designation sets this form apart from the other items within the line. In the large 1:16 scale even the small things stand out that would be lost at a smaller one: the layout of the rim, the shape of the tire sidewall and the pattern of the tread.
The flattened area of the tire has to point toward the ground, or the whole effect disappears. Seat the wheels, therefore, so that both meet the base in parallel and the model does not stand crooked. Cut surplus material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand off the remainder, so that the tread is not disturbed. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and choose the glue according to the material given on the packaging. Do not spray the tires in pure black; a muted dark gray looks truer. Set the rim apart in color and mask its edge when spraying.
