Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf. D German WWII Halftrack in 1:16 scale is a plastic kit of the German halftrack armored personnel carrier from Das Werk. The large scale gives room for detail in the hull and the running gear.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the German halftrack armored personnel carrier from the production of the German brand Das Werk. The 1:16 scale is exceptionally large for this type of equipment and means a sizeable model on which the shape of the hull, the mounting of the tracks and the small items of equipment all stand out. At the same time it is a build that deserves a calm pace and an order of work thought through in advance.
The Sd.Kfz. 251 was a medium armored personnel carrier that formed the basis of the German mechanized units of the Second World War. It combined a wheeled front axle with tracked running gear at the rear, which gave it good cross-country performance while keeping the steering simple. The Ausf. D form was the last and by far the most numerous production version; its identifying feature is the simplified rear, which replaced the several facets of the earlier versions with a single sloping plate, and the stowage bins let directly into the sides of the hull, thanks to which production was markedly speeded up. The designation 251/1 belongs to the basic carrier version for an infantry squad, that is, not to a special variant with a gun or with rocket launchers. The armament consisted of a machine gun on a shield above the front of the fighting compartment, and possibly a second machine gun at the rear. It is exactly this version that is the most common one in period photographs.
In a large scale it pays off to proceed by assemblies: first finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the hull, and only then close the sides up. Fit the tracks and the wheels only after the base coat has dried, otherwise you will reach the shadows less easily. Use a thin modeling cement on the plastic parts, which wicks into the joint, and sand the joints down once dry. Lay down a primer before painting, as it helps to reveal the remaining scratches and unifies the surface. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in several thin layers; the large area of the hull positively asks for a play of shades, so that the model does not look flat. At the end come a dark wash into the details, a dry brush on the edges and dust pigments on the underside and the tracks.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
