Soft Sandpaper 600 Sponge is a U-STAR soft sanding sponge with grit 600 — a medium grade that comes into its own in wet sanding curved shapes such as cowlings and fuselages.
Responsibility details are not available.
An abrasive on a flexible foam backing with grit 600 according to the name. A medium grade that no longer takes a shape down the way cleaning-up grits do, but can still remove the marks left by coarser sanding and prepare a surface for the finishing steps.
Where a rigid sanding stick knocks a flat spot into a fuselage, a sponge adapts and the surface stays smoothly curved. That is the main reason modelers reach for one on engine cowlings, rounded fuselages, turrets and barrels. The second advantage shows in wet sanding: the water carries away the material removed, which would otherwise clog the abrasive and start making scratches coarser than its own grit. At the same time it markedly reduces airborne dust, which is noticeable above all on longer work over a model in progress.
Wet both the sponge and the part and work with light strokes — the flexible backing takes care of the pressure. Keep rinsing and wiping the surface, because the slurry on it hides the real state of things and easily leads you to sand longer than you need to. Once finished, let the part dry perfectly, ideally overnight; residual moisture in microscopic irregularities can spoil even a well-prepared coat. Leave grit 600 as an intermediate step — before paint it is followed by finer grades, which level the remaining marks.
