Replacement drive shafts from the Japanese brand Top Studio for a model of the Ferrari F2003-GA formula car in 1:20 scale. This is not a model or a complete chassis; they are parts for a single place in the build, the connection of the gearbox to the hubs of the rear wheels.
Why the shafts are changed: on a single-seater the drive shafts are exposed between the gearbox and the wheel and on a finished model one looks straight at them. For reasons of technology, injection-molded plastic is always thicker in this place than the scale calls for, and in a thin configuration it tends to be brittle as well. A replacement part is more slender and at the same time more resistant to handling.
They are fitted while building the rear part of the chassis, before the wheels are fitted. Together with the brakes and the wheel nuts they are among the most effective small interventions that raise the impression of the chassis without any need to rebuild the whole model.
A dry test first: check both the length and the axis, because it is precisely the drive shaft that determines the offset of the wheel from the body. Cut the original plastic part off only afterward. Degrease the replacement, give it a base color and bond it with super glue applied with the tip of a wire. The surface looks good with a dark metallic shade completed by a fine dark wash, which brings out the transitions between the shaft and the joint.
This is not a kit of a model. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
